Some of the biggest underachievers I know are actually very intelligent and capable people.
Problem is…
They use all that intelligence to sit around thinking of clever excuses for never doing anything new with their lives.
Their limiting beliefs about themselves transform their intelligence into a mental prison…
…Instead of what it should be: their best tool for finding new ways to improve their lives.
Take my younger brother, for instance.
He’s a smart guy.
He’s hard working.
And he works very hard for very meager wages as a landscaper.
Very meager wages.
Hardly enough to pay rent and feed his kids.
And it doesn’t make a bit of sense, because…
He has all the tools, knowledge, and skills he could ever need to start his own business.
And, if he did strike out on his own…
He’d go from making spare change as an employee to making a cool six figures a year in his first few months as an independent contractor.
But…
He’s trapped in his own mind.
He’s held prisoner by his own limiting beliefs about what he can and can’t achieve.
And so, he always has an excuse.
- He needs a few more tools.
- He needs to study a few more insignificant details about running a business.
- He needs to pick the right font for his business card.
And he’s been making these excuses for eight years now.
EIGHT YEARS.
So I gotta wonder.
When’s the time gonna be right?
When will he have every last little bit of info he needs?
I don’t know. Maybe he never will.
What I do know is this:
If he had started his own business 8 years ago, he’d have figured out all the other little details by now.
And… he’d have been earning a lot more during those 8 years.
But, instead, he never even got started.
And still won’t.
Eight years have passed and he’s in a worse situation now than he was eight years ago.
The cost of living keeps increasing, but his hourly wage stays about the same.
His health is plummeting due to the stress of being overworked and underpaid.
And, eventually, he won’t have the time or the energy to do his own thing.
But…
He’s going to keep making up excuses for why it just isn’t the right time to do something better with his life.
So what’s all this got to do with you?
Simple.
Don’t be like my brother.
If nothing else, he can serve as a cautionary tale to the rest of us.
If you’re smart and hard working, but you’re working yourself to death doing something below your true talents…
And you’re putting off getting started on something better – for whatever weird excuses cross your mind just to keep you trapped in your comfort zone while you quietly tip-toe to your grave…
STOP.
Now is the time.
Every year you wait is a year you’ve lost.
That year is gone forever.
You won’t get it back.
The clock will keep on ticking and eventually you’ll be out of time.
And things will only get worse unless you start now working towards the life you actually want.
Best Wishes,
Jason Lynch
